No mountain in Pakistan announces itself quite like Rakaposhi. At 7,788 m, it rises an almost unbroken vertical mile from the floor of the Hunza Valley — a wall of ice and rock so immense it seems to belong to a different world. This trek puts you directly beneath it.

The route begins with a couple of days in Hunza — time to acclimatise, visit the historic forts of Karimabad, and let the scale of the place sink in. Then from Minapin, the trail climbs through pine forest and flower-filled summer pastures to Hapakun and eventually to Tagaphari base camp at 3,500 m, where Rakaposhi and its neighbour Diran fill the entire horizon.

From base camp, a morning exploring the Minapin Glacier — its crevassed surface, towering ice seracs and raw moraine ridges — brings the mountain even closer. It's the kind of place that resets your understanding of what mountains actually are.

The trek is moderate in difficulty, with manageable daily distances and sensible altitude gains throughout. Ideal for fit trekkers looking for a genuine high-mountain experience without the technical demands of a longer expedition.

Itinerary

Days 1–2

Islamabad → Hunza (Karimabad)

Drive the legendary Karakoram Highway from Islamabad, tracing the Indus River through deep gorges before climbing into the green terraces of Hunza. Settle into Karimabad with the peaks of the Karakoram filling the skyline. Overnight in hotel.

Day 3

Hunza Sightseeing

A rest day that's anything but restful. Visit the 700-year-old Baltit Fort and the ancient Altit Fort, wander the Karimabad bazaar, and make the short climb to Eagle's Nest viewpoint for a panorama that takes in Rakaposhi, Ultar Sar, and the Hunza River far below.

Day 4

Drive to Minapin → Trek to Hapakun Meadow

A short drive to Minapin village in the neighbouring Nagar Valley, then the trek begins. The trail climbs steadily through pine forest and scattered summer settlements before emerging onto the open meadows of Hapakun. Camp here with the first unobstructed views of Rakaposhi's south face.

Day 5

Hapakun → Tagaphari (Base Camp) — 3,500 m

The best day on the trek. A steady climb through alpine pastures leads to Tagaphari at 3,500 m — where Rakaposhi and Diran rise straight ahead and the Minapin Glacier spills down from the ice fields above. The scale of the mountain from here is simply overwhelming. Overnight at base camp.

Day 6

Base Camp → Glacier Exploration → Descent to Minapin

An early rise for sunrise on Rakaposhi's face before exploring closer to the glacier snout — a chaotic landscape of crevasses, ice towers and moraine ridges. Descend through the forest to Minapin in the afternoon. Overnight in hotel.

Days 7–9

Return via Karakoram Highway → Islamabad

A leisurely drive south along the Karakoram Highway, with stops at viewpoints, roadside tea houses and the chance to pick up local apricots and dried fruits before returning to Islamabad.
